Approaching Your Work Like It’s a Meal
Yesterday I forgot to have lunch.
I woke up with my usual banana, had a bowl of cereal and a coffee at 10. But by 2pm, I forgot to have lunch. I was caught up in a meeting and didn’t feel all that hungry anyway. The problem was, my afternoon and dinner were pretty much ruined because of it.
Every hour it seemed like I was getting up to look for a snack. Chips, pretzels, peanut butter, almonds, an apple… I obviously wasn’t hungry for dinner because I was snacking all day.
By bedtime I was starving.
So I had a pre-bedtime snack and still wasn’t satisfied by the time I went to sleep. Needless to say, skipping lunch threw off my day and my night.
Our work has the same effect on us.
If we spend our day snacking on our to-do list, we’re consuming those calories but rarely feel satisfied.
In order to feel more accomplished every day– to close our computers at the end of the day having achieved what we set out to achieve, in the manner we are fully capable of doing it– we need meals.
We need a deep dive into a balanced mix that will nourish our brain and our relationship to work. Go for the heavy stuff that will make you feel satisfied.
In other words, don’t skip (work) meals.
Snacking is for amateurs.
